ABOUT US

THE PAST

In 2001, a group of students and staff from an inner city education centre, Silai for Skills, established a new community venture - the Silai Nappy Company (SNC). This group researched and produced a number of environmentally friendly baby products - a cotton reusable nappy, and accompanying liners, flannels and bags. The nappy and accessories were made in limited quantities, and successfully piloted at a specialist retail outlet (Born) which stocks other brands of reusable nappies largely imported into the UK.

Production was suspended whilst the group researched funding avenues, formalised the company structure and appointed a voluntary board of directors in October of 2003.

OUR OBJECTIVES

1. To use local labour pooled from disadvantaged communities in inner city Bristol to manufacture and retail reusable cotton nappies and other baby products.
2. To increase awareness of the environmental and financial costs of using disposable nappies through planned targeted promotional activity in partnership with the Real Nappy Project Bristol.
3. To divert more nappy waste away from landfill by increasing awareness and promoting real nappies locally, nationally and internationally.
4. To create a line of products that are both environmentally responsible and competitive in the market place to contribute towards the company’s future sustainability.

OUR ACHIEVEMENTS:

Babeco has:
• Fundraised to support its re-development as a sustainable community enterprise
• Recruited 23 local people to the staff team
• Developed many new Items for the environmentally friendly baby market
• Begun to retail its goods locally to produce income to support the production staff.
• Re-launched the company with a new trading name and image.

Babeco Curently recieves funding from Bristol City Council Objective 2 ERDF scheme, Esmee Fairbairn Foundation and Community Recycling and Economic Develop fund part of the Big lottery programme - which will support the company until 2008.
